We have not got a car but are planning to get one in the next couple of months. We found a place that is nice and of course too expensive compared to the normal rents. London too is very expensive so I am kind already brain watched. In SF, the rent-control only applies to building older then 1979. Most of friends are in the same kind of situation, looking for a place to live without getting robbed … just mugged ;)

Rents in the Bay area are exhorbitant I hear. Ian's right. Ask around. They also say to drive around areas you like and look for "for rent" signs. Sometimes people don't advertize.
